In memoriam Brian Miller

As we journey through life, we meet and engage with many people. From time to time, we encounter someone with whom we develop an immediate connection and with whom we share values and principles.

I had lost my eldest child, my son Darren, who was 23 at the time and who died of Leukemia. I was determined that South Africa should have a Bone Marrow Registry and had embarked on that journey, it was then that I met Brian Miller.
He was larger than life, passionate about causes, determined to uplift the less privileged and tenacious and resolute about everything that he embarked on, in the interests of those around him.

His wife Helene and his four daughters were his fulcrum. He loved them and was devoted to enriching their lives, and the lives of their partners and their children. His other great love was Reach For A Dream. Brian was one of the founding fathers and spent 27 years embroiled in developing the brand offering and reaching out to life threatened children.

He touched many lives and regardless of the complexity or simplicity of a dream, derived boundless pleasure from having enriched the life of a child, who was vulnerable and in pain.
Brian was first diagnosed with cancer in the early 90’s. He shook it off and continued to live life to the fullest. He was struck down repeatedly by various forms of the disease, underwent a number of surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, and never once complained. He never missed a board meeting, continued to enrich lives, remained fervent in his belief in God and in his fellow man.

I miss him every day and loved him beyond words. We became friends, spent real time together and travelled extensively, as friends often do.
I’ve lost an arm and the Foundation has lost its compass. I will always love him and he will always be integral to my life and will be ever present as we continue to touch the lives of our beautiful children.

Rest in peace dear friend -
Mervyn Serebro, Chairman

[/dt_sc_resizable][dt_sc_resizable first][dt_sc_hr_invisible /][dt_sc_h2 type="type1" class=""]Founder[/dt_sc_h2]Owen Parnell

Owen Parnell

The inspiration to start the Reach For A Dream Foundation came from an article on the Make - A - Wish Foundation, based in America. Owen Parnell, past Randburg Rotary Club President, was struck by the opportunity to establish a similar venture in South Africa. On 7 July 1988, the organisation made its very first dream come true. And so the journey of dream fulfillment began. Our first dreamer, little J C Steinman, was treated to a wonderful birthday celebration with rides on a pony and a motorcycle. Officially named the Reach For A Dream Foundation in 1991, the organisation defined its core purpose as “fulfilling the dreams of children of any race, colour and creed between the ages of 3 and 18 faced with a life-threatening illness.”

“Owen was a man of vision, who made a real difference by creating a legacy that has grown from strength to strength and which will continue to have an effect on the lives of so many children and their families as we continue to be a part of one of the most precious gifts we can give these children – the fulfillment of their dreams.” – Brian Miller, Honorary Life President of Reach For A Dream.

For 28 years the Reach For A Dream Foundation, has brought hope, joy and healing to countless South African children. These children between the ages of 3 and 18 years have used their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and leukaemia, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, renal failure and various blood disorders.

Reach For A Dream seeks to alleviate the strain that a life-threatening illness places on these children and their families by providing the children with the opportunity to realise their dream. Reach For A Dream enriches children's lives by making dreams come true and as a result, distracting them from the needles, medication and hospital environment. These young children are under extreme pressure to deal with these medical issues and are in desperate need of our encouragement. In addition, Reach For A Dream offers the child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an illness.

Who Is Eligible

[dt_sc_h2 type="type1" class=""] [/dt_sc_h2]A child needs to be a South African resident, aged between 3 – 18 years of age, fighting a life-threatening illness and should not have received a wish from another wishgranting organisation. We can accept a child if we receive the referral on their 3rd birthday or before the day of their 18th birthday.[dt_sc_hr_invisible /]

Refer A Dream Child

[dt_sc_h2 type="type1" class=" "] [/dt_sc_h2]

After confirming the child has a life-threatening condition, we will send a short form to the family asking for further information about the dream child. Once we have this form back we will arrange for our specially-trained volunteers or staff to visit the dream child to find out what their dreams are.

Dream Stories

[dt_sc_h2 type="type1" class=""] [/dt_sc_h2]

Do you remember your childhood?

Playing with your friends, playing ball games, playing hide and seek?

Dreaming of what you would be when you grew up?

Remember dreaming of the home you would build, the family you would raise?

In South Africa today, there are thousands of children, whose only dream is to have a childhood without pain, but sadly, because of their medical condition, they are bedridden or wheelchair bound and many of them may never reach adulthood.

At Reach For A Dream every day is spent working with children between the ages of 3 and 18 who are fighting life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart conditions and renal failure, to name a few. We strive to fulfill the dreams of these children across South Africa.

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness they, as well as their family, are placed under enormous psychological, financial, and emotional stress. RFAD seeks to alleviate the strain that a life-threatening illness takes on the children and their families by providing them with an opportunity to realise their dream.  These young children are under extreme pressure to deal with serious medical issues and are in desperate need of encouragement. At RFAD we believe in the power of inspiring hope, particularly for a child who has been told that they may not have much longer to live.

For us at Reach for a Dream, the most important motivator is to make the dream a truly memorable and magical experience.

By making dreams come true RFAD enriches children's lives, we offer each child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to illness.

The process of dream fulfillment begins with a visit to the dream child at the location where the child is being cared for. Once a doctor has verified that the child meets the criteria for dream fulfillment, the dream assessment process begins.

Once permission has been granted by the doctor, we take the child, together with their family, out of their normal surroundings, to fulfill their dream. Anyone can contribute to a dream for a child fighting a life threatening illness. The fulfillment of these dreams has the positive effect of inspiring hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for.

Queen for a Day

Queen for a day affords little girls an entry into a world of pampering, where focus is placed on making them feel beautiful and confident; something, often missing in a hospital environment.

The day is filled with indulging every little girl’s dream of being a “princess “. They are treated to limousines, manicures, pedicures and make overs, with a professional photographer capturing the joy that fills every moment.

Each girl is crowned Queen for a day, showing her how beautiful she is, no matter how her illness may affect her life or her appearance.

The look of disbelief on Karabo’s face when Fifi arrived was priceless. Karabo couldn’t stop smiling, and Fifi was immensely humble about being there to grant Karabo her wish. Fifi signed the shirt as well as the hat for Karabo, with typical Fifi flair. Karabo was speechless for a great majority of the afternoon, she happily posed when having her photo taken. The Dream Riders are dedicated cyclists who commit themselves to riding the Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge for Reach for a Dream. Each year a team of cyclists tackle the challenge with the thought of the Reach for a Dream children, fuelling their legs to keep pedalling.

To date the Dream Riders have raised over R6 million, with each individual rider raising R1800 for Reach for a Dream.

We are grateful for the continued support of Nedbank; thanks to their support every rand raised goes towards making dreams come true.

What is Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving allows employees to contribute towards charities like Reach For A Dream by giving their employers permission to deduct it from their salaries.

This is a very convenient way for them to make tax efficient contributions towards a cause of their choice.

How Payroll Giving Works

In order to start a Payroll Giving Scheme, the employer needs to subscribe to the Reach For A Dream Donor Payroll and will be issued a Donor Code for this account.

The employees can then choose to sign up for the scheme by completing a consent form to authorize their deductions. The Payroll Department (HR) simply deducts the money from the employee’s gross salary, and the Payroll or Finance Department will then transfer the collected donations to the Reach for a Dream Foundation.

The foundation will issue a thank you letter and annual Tax Exempt receipts (Section 18(a) Certificate) to each Payroll Giving Donor.

Benefits Of Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is an easy, tax efficient way to contribute towards the Reach For A Dream Foundation. There are no administrations costs going to an external party and every cent of the funds will go towards fulfilling the dreams of children countrywide that are fighting life threatening diseases. The system is easy to opt in and out of, giving the donors full control over their giving.

Benefits for charities

Payroll Giving creates a sustainable income stream for the charity, making it easier to budget and plan. The donation goes straight from the individual’s account into the Reach For A Dream bank account.

It’s a way to communicate with and get to know donors (although donors can choose to remain anonymous). This way the charity can build a relationship with them and employers.

Benefits for individuals

Benefits for employers

Payroll Giving Contracts

Why do Employers need to sign a Payroll Giving Contract?

By signing a contract, the employer commits to making deductions on behalf of employees that wish to participate in the scheme and to forward these monies to the charity every month.

This agreement will secure the partnership between the company and Reach For A Dream and will provide all the necessary information for an audit trail for pre-tax payroll deductions. The agreement is very simple and contains all the relevant information needed to comply with pre-tax deduction legislations.

Payroll Giving Form

Employees need to complete a Payroll Giving Form to authorize the employer to make deductions from their pay. Employees simply complete one form, identifying Reach For A Dream as their charity of choice, and indicate how much they wish to give and for which period. Copies of the completed forms are submitted to Reach For A Dream to maintain a database and verify promised funding.

What Does the Employer Have to Do?

Once a month, employers need to forward employees’ payroll deductions to the charity, including a list of people that have donated and the amount they have deducted during that period.

This is a great way to keep records, to ensure that each employee receives a Section 18A certificate and to give them feedback about how their contributions were used. These receipts and feedback will be given annually.

What Happens if an Employee Wants to Remain Anonymous?

All donors have the opportunity to donate anonymously if they prefer. Reach for A Dream will ensure that their information remains confidential. No additional contact will be made unless it’s initiated by the individual.

Smart cars for our smart dreamer

Our dreamer was so excited for his dream day that he had dressed in his finest clothes to mark the occasion.

As part of his dream, Phemelo went to Zwartkops Raceway with Mercedes Benz. Phemelo, who is 8 years old and is suffering with Kaposi Sarcoma, received a very warm welcome by the staff at Mercedes. After a delicious lunch had been served, the fun started. Phemelo could choose which car he wanted to go for a test drive in. As Phemelo is a Mercedes Benz admirer, he was in his element. The Mercedes driver took our dreamer for a test drive around the track which included drifting. Phemelo loved every minute of the experience. After all the excitement, there was more to come – Phemelo’s dream hand over. The team at Mercedes handed over the Playstation and games to Phemelo, who could not believe his eyes. He had tears of joy running down his face, along with the biggest smile you have ever seen.Phemelo had a wonderful day. One he is sure to never forget!

A MINI car ride like no other

Pretoria’s little Phenyo's dream was to own a Playstation and to ride in a MINI Cooper S convertible; in his own words "The one that makes a lot of noise!”
5 year old Phenyo’s dream came true with thanks to MINI Northcliff Auto, Soweto Miniacs and Eastrand Miniacs. Everyone came together to give our dreamer the ultimate MINI experience. Phenyo, who has Medullablastoma, enjoyed a convoy, in his honour, from Northcliff to Menlyn, where he was further treated to a photo shoot and personalised MINI cake. Then it was time for lunch at Spur, where Phenyo enjoyed his favourite meal of ribs and chips. Our little dreamer could not contain his excitement when he unwrapped his dream Playstation! The day truly surpassed his wildest dreams.

Karabo designs her dream!

Karabo is a talented young girl who loves fashion! Her dream is to be a fashion designer and she fell in love with the dresses from the hand of Gert-Johan Coetzee, a creative designer who is internationally renowned for his work with local celebrities and pageant queens. How this special dream took place:We picked Karabo up at the hospital and she still had no idea what was waiting for her, but she was so beautifully dressed that it was clear she knew it was going to be fashion related! We made our way to the studios of Gert-Johan Coetzee and Karabo could not believe her eyes when she saw where we were. She was going to meet her hero! The dream started with a tour of his studio, including the very elusive “closet” where dresses were displayed that various celebrities and TV stars had worn before. We went on a tour of the pattern making area, the sewing section as well as meeting all the assistant designers, bead artists and seamstresses. Karabo was lost in a world of fashion, design and creative flair and just when she thought it was over, Gert-Johan broke the news that he is going to design her a special outfit! They excitedly went off to his famous designing chair and threw around a few ideas until they had the perfect outfit in mind. It was going to be a fairy skirt with a beautiful pink top and Karabo had the drawings to prove it – signed and sealed by the GJ Couture sticker!Karabo was thrilled, BUT there was more… the whole team came together and surprised her by starting to make the outfit as well – what an incredible experience! She had the opportunity to see them sew the skirt and top from start to finish and even had a hand in the whole process; arranging material, cutting string, making a scarf and having a fitting or two. The day culminated in a mini fashion shoot with her brand new outfit before we head to her favourite restaurant for a late lunch. Karabo had no idea that Reach For A Dream still had something more up their sleeve and she gave a gasp of disbelief as I gave her a brand new Blackberry (which was her second dream) She quickly opened it and hugged it tight! At the end of it all, Karabo asked me if she was allowed to keep it and it was with a very full heart (and eyes) that I could send her home with her GJ Couture outfit and a blackberry to tell the world!

Johanri’s family had come from Nelspruit for this special occasion. The best part was that Johanri had no idea what to expect!

Our Johannesburg Branch collected Johanri and her family from the lodge where they were staying, on a beautiful morning. Johanri is 16 years old and has Cystic Fibrosis. Upon arrival at the SA Hockey training field, the team were excited to meet Johanri and made her feel like one of them. They included her in their training session and presented her with a signed SA Team shirt. They really went out of their way to make this young lady feel special. Johanri was then presented with her dream, a brand new Samsung Galaxy S6 cell phone and she was beyond happy. She absolutely loved the colour and couldn’t stop saying thank you to everyone!

4 year old Ruan wanted to spend the weekend in Durban for his dream.

Little Ruan was diagnosed with Nephroblastoma. The Captain and crew of the flight welcomed Ruan on board, where he was also allowed to enter the cockpit and to see how such a big plane operates. After checking into the hotel, the family made their way to the beach front at Marine Parade, where they strolled along the beach. The following morning the family headed to uShaka for a truly fun filled day which included a dolphin show, a visit to the aquarium, visits to the pool and slides as well as a tube ride down the lazy river. Before heading back to Johannesburg, the family took a boat ride out to sea, where they enjoyed spectacular views of Durban. An unforgettable trip for Ruan and his family.

Barbie filled dream day

Iviwe's dream of playing Barbie with a real-life Barbie came true when Miss Teen SA 2017, Chace Collett, spent the day helping Iviwe dress up and play Barbie. As 5 year old Iviwe drank tea and ate cake, she couldn’t help feel beautiful, just like Barbie. Iviwe, who has Cardiomyopathy, loved her doll house and all the Barbie dolls she took home with her at the end of the dream. This little girl had so much fun that even her Granny had to join her and her Barbie dolls for tea. Thank you to the Charles Glass Society and Blue Lagoon hotel for sponsoring and believing in the power of dreams to help make this dream come true.

Dancing With The Stars

Nemesia, is a 17 year old young lady who has liver failure and is very passionate about dancing. Her dream was to learn to do Ballroom and Latin American dancing. Sarene’s Dance Studio kindly assisted us in making this dream come true by giving Nemesia the opportunity to have professional dancing lessons as well as having her perform in their year-end function. Nemesia loved each and every dancing lesson she attended and was a complete natural. On the day of the year-end performance, Nemeisa and her family arrived to their very own pre-show party, with cooldrinks, snacks and a team of professionals to transform this already beautiful lady into a dancing queen. Nemeisa was thrilled and could not believe this was all for her. After a lovely day of pampering, Namesia received her final surprise, a beautiful red dancing gown with matching dancing shoes. The look on her face when she opened her dream items was absolutely priceless. Nemesia was welcomed to the dance school with a huge round of applause and she was gleaming with joy! Her performance was phenomenal and she received a standing ovation.

Camp Sunshine

Camp Sunshine is a weekend away where the emphasis is placed on team work and building social skills. Children with similar medical challenges are drawn together in days of fun, spent outdoors where their illnesses are set aside.

The children learn social skills in peer group settings which is an imperative step in their lives as their social interaction is often limited to interaction with doctors and their family only. The camp also nurtures confidence and problem solving skills, overcoming obstacles as part of a team.

The name Camp Sunshine describes the camp perfectly as the weekend is truly filled with joy, sunshine and laughter.

Captain Courage

Captain Courage

A rush of adrenaline, a day of fun and a memorable adventure. These are the things that define a day spent at Captain Courage. Here young boys face adventure head on, with smiles that cannot be contained and a spirit that cannot be suppressed.

Captain Courage offers many adventures, including zip lining; obstacle courses; horseback riding and interaction with wild animals. A day spent at Captain Courage allows children to focus on a day of fun, and to forget about their illness, while enjoying themselves romping outdoors in the sun.

At the end of the day, each boy receives a medal and a certificate, reminding him that he has the ability to overcome obstacles, including his illness.

Jabulani Kingdom

Jabulani Kingdom

Laughter is the best medicine. This adage holds true in the hospitals where the wards are filled with laughter thanks to the Jabulani team. Each Jabulani entertainer’s aim is to bring a smile to the children’s faces, through a number of acts including tricycles, juggling, balloon sculptures, magic, face paint and, above all, silliness.

Laughter is known to strengthen the immune system, boost energy, minimise lethargy and decrease stress. These effects are important for both the children suffering from life threatening illnesses and their families, who often need a few minutes of sheer fun to alleviate the stress of being in hospital.

the little boys was crying. Being in a playful mood, I decided to make balloons for all the children. Most were boys, so I made balloon swords. As we were playing, the crying of that one little boy became less and less. Eventually he got out of bed and came closer to investigate, at which point I made a balloon sword for him as well. Within a few minutes he had joined the rest of the crew running around with their balloon swords! The sisters were very grateful and said he has been crying for long time, as he had his operation earlier that day. They didn’t think anyone could get him to smile, let alone start running around. That was one of the first memorable moments that made me appreciate and love what I do even more.

A favourite memory of mine is of a little boy, crying for his mother, about to spend a year in the TB hospital. I was playing a seated game with the rest of the children & I gathered him into my arms & rocked him. He curled up with his thumb in his mouth & went to sleep. It brings a tear to my eyes to this day. All the times when I do something silly & make a child laugh & the nurses exclaim “She’s never smiled, let alone laughed, since she was admitted”. It happened again only a short time ago & the nurse called all the other sisters in to watch as I played with the child. So rewarding.

I realised that sometimes the young children don’t always want to see magic or balloons, but rather just to have someone to talk too. On my next visit to the hospital, she was still there. When she saw me, she told me she had something special for me and handed over a beautiful handmade card with a sweet taped to the inside. I was so grateful that she thought of me during her hospital stay.

What has always been so bright in my mind, since I started working for Reach For A Dream, is the fact that I have made a small difference in the lives of the children...

[dt_sc_toggle_framed title="Read More"]

I have a lot of parents that greet me warmly, with a smile in the street (especially when they are with their children) and they will shout “Hello Teaspoon Jabulani!” The other beautiful memory I have, is when I met this one family who hugged me and told me that I was very good at entertaining the children in the hospital. Their little girl looked forward to seeing me on my shifts, during her 3 month stay in hospital. We still keep in touch!

What I love most about being a Jabulani, is that when we laugh together, we bypass reason and logic, and speak a universal language.  Nothing beats fun !  Happiness is like jam, you can't spread it, without getting some on yourself.

Family Focus

Family Focus

No family expects a child to be diagnosed with a life threatening illness, and once the diagnosis has been made the entire family’s reality changes. The new family dynamic often strains the relationships of parents with their children and of siblings with each other. Families often become isolated, limiting their movements to the proposed treatment plan.

Family Focus aims to alleviate these challenges by offering families a chance to rebuild their relationships and meet other families experiencing similar circumstances. The weekend is filled with activities, focusing on the entire family enjoying a day of fun, where illnesses are forgotten.

Here relationships are built, friendships are formed and an escape from the hospital and its associated worries is achieved.

What happens next?

After confirming the child has a life-threatening condition, we will send a short form to the family asking for further information about the dream child. Once we have this form back we will arrange for our specially-trained volunteers or staff to visit the dream child to find out what their dreams are.

Dream: To meet Fifi Cooper

Karabo is a high school student who wanted to be a policewoman. In November 2016, she was admitted to hospital with Multi-Drug Resistant TB. Karabo spent five days a week in hospital over a year and was finally discharged in January 2017.Reach for a Dream contacted Karabo in 2017 to make her dream come true and discovered that Karabo had a passion for music and in particular Fifi Cooper who she wanted to spend a day with. Karabo had a very clear idea of how her day with Fifi Cooper would unfold; starting with Fifi picking her up in a RFAD vehicle and ending with a lunch.Karabo and her sister met the dream makers team at the office before heading to Mall of Africa to choose a hat and T-shirt for Fifi to sign. They then headed for Casa Bella where Fifi surprised Karabo. The Reach for a Dream dream-makers team described the afternoon as magical. “The look of disbelief on Karabo’s face when Fifi arrived was priceless. At the end of the afternoon, Karabo wore her newly signed hat with the smile never leaving her face.”

Dream: To have a birthday party

Kenewe is a bright and ambitious young lady battling Hodgkins Lymphoma. Kenewe doesn’t let her illness hold her back and has a positive outlook on life. She wants to be a business woman when she finishes school. Her dream was to have a party with all of her friends and cousins and to have a beautiful outfit to wear; her illness had caused her to lose a lot of weight and her clothes didn’t fit anymore. She had specific instructions for her party; there had to be sweets, chocolates, crème soda, sausage rolls, and red velvet cupcakes. The party was graciously hosted by Goldfields and the theme was Paris, Kenewe’s favourite place and Reach for a Dream also made sure to include Kenewe’s favourite colour - sky blue.Reach for a Dream made sure this is exactly what she got.The party was a surprise and when Kenewe arrived at the venue with her friends she was very surprised to see Reach for a Dream there. Slipper day

Slipper day

Slipper day is a simple and fun way to support Reach For A Dream. By merely buying a R10 wristband and wearing your slippers out of the house, you are supporting children and adolescents who have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses.

This incentive, to wear the comfiest slippers you have, on Slipper day, comes with the knowledge that because of your contribution children’s dreams are being realised.

Dream Riders

Dream Riders

The Dream Riders are dedicated cyclists who commit themselves to riding the Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge for Reach for a Dream. Each year a team of cyclists tackle the challenge with the thought of the Reach for a Dream children, fuelling their legs to keep pedalling.

To date the Dream Riders have raised over R6 million, with each individual rider raising R1800 for Reach for a Dream.

Aircraft Raffle

Aircraft Raffle

The Aircraft Raffle has been running since 1998 and has helped fulfill the dreams of thousands of children. The prize for the lucky winner each year has been an aircraft and a pilot’s license course, fulfilling their own dream while also helping to grant the children, their dreams.

The money raised from the raffle leaves children’s hopes flying high as their dreams become reality

Show You Care Send A bear

Show You Care Send A bear

We bring joy and comfort to hospitalised children by giving them beautiful, warm, cuddly teddy bears. The bears provide a welcome distraction from the medical treatment that the children are receiving and will help alleviate some of the anxiety and fear that children may experience whilst they are in hospital.

Bianca’s story

By Bianca’s mom, Wendy MullerBianca was diagnosed with a rhabdomyosarcoma in the right orbit when she was 8 years old. She relapsed a total of 4 times.During one of her many chemo treatments at the JHB hospital, Margaret Rushworth from Reach for a Dream came to see her. Bianca was about 9 then. Margaret gave her a form on which to list Dreams that she wished for. First on the list was to ride a horse then meet Tom Cruise and Micky Mouse. I can’t remember the other things which she listed. In June of 1991 Bianca’s dream to ride a horse came true. She was over the moon! After that, in between treatments and only if she was feeling okay, I would take her to the stables. Aunty May would give Bianca a lesson and then take her to feed the horses.A few months later Margaret came to the house for tea and brought Bianca a pic of Tom, on which he had written a message to her. We framed it and up it went where she could see it. She was crazy about him after having seen the movie CocktailAbout a year later Margaret phoned to say that Bianca was going to meet Mickey Mouse in Disneyland, Orlando! In August of 1992 my husband & I, together with Bianca’s brothers Daniel & Jonathan, left for the USA. We happily paid towards flights so that the boys could go along too. It was really very, very special for Bianca to be able to share that magical week with her siblings. In Orlando we stayed at Kids World in Kissimmee, which in itself was such a treat. On our first morning there, as we were having breakfast, our family was asked to move to the front of the dining hall and tell everyone where we were from. The next thing the main door opened and in walked Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Pluto and the Chipmunks WOW! Bianca’s face lit up, her smile was wider than ear to ear and she was just totally lost for words, like the rest of us.We crammed a lot into that week, visiting Epcot Centre, MGM, Universal Studios, Sea World and Magic Kingdom.Bianca was in a wheelchair and her brothers did most of the pushing. At every place we visited we received five star treatment, as the most unbelievable facilities were provided for anyone needing help. No queuing, free refreshments, pics taken with Characters and very often gifts for all the kids.We were all blown away by this whole experience and have such wonderful memories. The kids could not stop talking about the trip, as it was the first time since Bianca had been diagnosed that we had been away together. It was a special time for her, if only for a while to be able to forget her illness. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Reach for a Dream.Bianca passed away on Christmas morning 1993, at 12 years 3 months & 23 days of age. It was a privilege to have been her mother, as she taught me and many others many life lessons.

Matthew's Story

By Matthew’s mom, Janet LegemaateIn 2007, when Matthew was 10 years of age, his doctors put him forward to Reach for A Dream as they didn’t expect him to survive much longer. In the latter part of 2007, Matthew’s dream of going to Walt Disney World came about as a result of RFAD organising for Make a Wish in the USA to gift the family accommodation and tickets to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. After we arranged the money for flights we were off for Matthew to have the holiday of a lifetime. The experience was far more than Matthew could ever imagine, staying at Give Kids the World Village, where even the dustbins talked, having a star with his name placed on the ceiling of the castle, to walking around in amazement at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. Matthew had an incredible time, living the adventures he had seen in videos and having the opportunity to go on rides and meet characters from his favourite movies. Thank you RFAD for giving Matthew his wish and an experience of a lifetime. Matthew subsequently went on permanent oxygen a couple of years after this trip as he needed a heart and double lung transplant.  This he received after waiting for 7 years in October of 2017. He is doing incredibly well and plans to Pay it Forward as much as he is able in the future.

Dream: To own a variety of fast cars and helicoptersLorenzo, who has Aplastic Anaemia, and his mom were picked up by our dream team and taken straight to the Randburg Race Way for a fast car experience before his dream of fast cars and helicopters were presented to him as a surprise.Lorenzo and his family were so excited about the day, knowing that his dream was finally coming true! Lorenzo had a chance to ride around in the race track, driving himself which he so enjoyed. After an exhilarating two laps our dream team presented him with a collection of brand new fast cars and helicopter toys. He loved every single car and helicopter. After Lorenzo’s dream came true he got to enjoy his favourite meal, ribs and chips at RocoMamas!
Dream: An Xbox One S and GamesWhen Mpho, who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, and his dad joined our dream team they had no idea what was in store for them. They started their dad with a movie which Mpho was very excited about as he had been looking forward to seeing Black Panther and then they headed over to Spur for lunch. At Spur Mpho was served a lot more than he was expecting, along with his lunch came his dream, a brand new Xbox One S with a monitor, games and extra controller!Mpho couldn’t believe all of it was for him!
Dream: PS4 and MonitorWe met Tumelo and his family on a chilly Saturday at Menlyn Mall and he was so excited to started playing games that he didn’t even want breakfast! At the Fun Company Tumelo showed us just why he was so eager to play; he really showed off his skill! He played almost every game on offer at the arcade and even convinced his mom to join him in a round of bumper cars. After exhausting himself it was time to redeem all the tickets he’d won with his impressive gaming skills. Without his knowledge, we’d handed a gift to the staff at the prize counter to give to Tumelo along with his other prizes so to his surprise and absolute delight, one of the prizes he got from his tickets was his dream! A brand new PS4 plus a console and a monitor to play it on. Tumelo couldn’t contain his joy, he kept looking up to his mom as if to say “can you believe it mom?!”We ended our magical day together at McDonald’s, it seems all the fun and excitement had worked up an appetite in our young dreamer!

Dave’s story

Submitted by Dave’s mom, Patricia WasserfallDave had just finished grade 10 and the holidays had just started. He was 15 years old. It was 1998. He came to me with a problem that he couldn’t pass urine and what should we do. After various tests we discovered that he had a tumour and he had prostate cancer at 15 years old. For two years we took him through to Pretoria to the Little Company of Mary to have chemo and then radiation. He met so many youngsters so much younger than him going through the same trauma.During that time we tried to make him as comfortable as possible. We would buy new computer games for him to make the time pass. My other son, Colin, took him to Namibia for a holiday and stood by his brother right through the dreadful pain. While at The little Company of Mary they arranged a helicopter ride with Reach for a Dream. It was at Zwartkoppies. He forgot all his pain that day and enjoyed himself so much. Soon after that he went for another session of chemo. Months later he, myself and his stepbrother were taken to Leopard Rock Reserve for a few days donated by Reach for a Dream. The people at the reserve were so kind to Dave and patiently listened to his life story. We took Dave on holiday whenever he was feeling well enough. He loved horses and at Zimbali in KZN he was taken for a few horse rides. He was so brave for those two years suffering so many problems rushing him off in the middle of the night to various doctors with so many bad affects brought on by the chemo. He had a wonderful doctor at the oncology centre in Pretoria who took such good care of him and I am so thankful to all the people who supported us through that terrible time that our 15 year old son suffered. Towards the end, Hospice in Houghton sent a wonderful nurse to help us.Looking through my memory box I have from 1998 to 2000 of Dave I have such beautiful cards from family and friends and a diary that David kept that, although sad at times, brings a smile and a tear to my face. He had to grow up so fast. Where other teenagers looked forward to parties and meeting friends and having girlfriends Dave was just too happy to be alive and being pain free and having his mother and brother by his side to sympathise and comfort him through his pain. Having a movie to watch, a book to read and playing his favourite games on the computer.Dave died in 2000. I think about all the wonderful things that have since happened that he would have enjoyed in his life. My other, Colin, went on to marry and has had two most gorgeous children that Dave would have enjoyed having in his life. My third son moved to Tasmania and had three children. Dave would have loved to have spent time with them. We have six most delightful dogs that would have loved the time with Dave. He had so many adventures to experience. We always think of him when new thing happen in our lives.“We miss you so much Dave, even though seventeen years have passed you are always with us.”

MiaDream: To have her own makeupLittle Mia is 4 years old from Pretoria, she has a brain tumour. We organised lots of makeup and a real life Rapunzel to share the day with Mia.  Although little Mia was so sick, as soon as she caught sight of the makeup kit, she gave the first glimpse of a smile for the day.  She happily applied makeup on Rapunzel and on both her granny and mommy.  Mia really has a passion for makeup!  It was touching to see how much she loved her makeup kit and accessories. This will definitely keep her busy whilst she is feeling unwell.
