From time to time, we encounter someone with whom we develop an immediate connection and with whom we share values and principles.
I had lost my eldest child, my son Darren, who was 23 at the time and who died of Leukemia. I was determined that South Africa should have a Bone Marrow Registry and had embarked on that journey, it was then that I met Brian Miller.
He was larger than life, passionate about causes, determined to uplift the less privileged and tenacious and resolute about everything that he embarked on, in the interests of those around him.
His wife Helene and his four daughters were his fulcrum. He loved them and was devoted to enriching their lives, and the lives of their partners and their children. His other great love was Reach For A Dream. Brian was one of the founding fathers and spent 27 years embroiled in developing the brand offering and reaching out to life threatened children.
He touched many lives and regardless of the complexity or simplicity of a dream, derived boundless pleasure from having enriched the life of a child, who was vulnerable and in pain.
Brian was first diagnosed with cancer in the early 90’s. He shook it off and continued to live life to the fullest. He was struck down repeatedly by various forms of the disease, underwent a number of surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, and never once complained. He never missed a board meeting, continued to enrich lives, remained fervent in his belief in God and in his fellow man.
I miss him every day and loved him beyond words. We became friends, spent real time together and travelled extensively, as friends often do.
I’ve lost an arm and the Foundation has lost its compass. I will always love him and he will always be integral to my life and will be ever present as we continue to touch the lives of our beautiful children.
Rest in peace dear friend -
Mervyn Serebro, Chairman
The inspiration to start the Reach For A Dream Foundation came from an article on the Make - A - Wish Foundation, based in America. Owen Parnell, past Randburg Rotary Club President, was struck by the opportunity to establish a similar venture in South Africa. On 7 July 1988, the organisation made its very first dream come true. And so the journey of dream fulfillment began. Our first dreamer, little J C Steinman, was treated to a wonderful birthday celebration with rides on a pony and a motorcycle. Officially named the Reach For A Dream Foundation in 1991, the organisation defined its core purpose as “fulfilling the dreams of children of any race, colour and creed between the ages of 3 and 18 faced with a life-threatening illness.”
“Owen was a man of vision, who made a real difference by creating a legacy that has grown from strength to strength and which will continue to have an effect on the lives of so many children and their families as we continue to be a part of one of the most precious gifts we can give these children – the fulfillment of their dreams.” – Brian Miller, Honorary Life President of Reach For A Dream.
For 28 years the Reach For A Dream Foundation, has brought hope, joy and healing to countless South African children. These children between the ages of 3 and 18 years have used their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and leukaemia, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, renal failure and various blood disorders.
Reach For A Dream seeks to alleviate the strain that a life-threatening illness places on these children and their families by providing the children with the opportunity to realise their dream. Reach For A Dream enriches children's lives by making dreams come true and as a result, distracting them from the needles, medication and hospital environment. These young children are under extreme pressure to deal with these medical issues and are in desperate need of our encouragement. In addition, Reach For A Dream offers the child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to an illness.

[/dt_sc_fullwidth_section]After confirming the child has a life-threatening condition, we will send a short form to the family asking for further information about the dream child. Once we have this form back we will arrange for our specially-trained volunteers or staff to visit the dream child to find out what their dreams are.
[dt_sc_hr_invisible /]Do you remember your childhood?
Playing with your friends, playing ball games, playing hide and seek?
Dreaming of what you would be when you grew up?
Remember dreaming of the home you would build, the family you would raise?
In South Africa today, there are thousands of children, whose only dream is to have a childhood without pain, but sadly, because of their medical condition, they are bedridden or wheelchair bound and many of them may never reach adulthood.
At Reach For A Dream every day is spent working with children between the ages of 3 and 18 who are fighting life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart conditions and renal failure, to name a few. We strive to fulfill the dreams of these children across South Africa.
When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness they, as well as their family, are placed under enormous psychological, financial, and emotional stress. RFAD seeks to alleviate the strain that a life-threatening illness takes on the children and their families by providing them with an opportunity to realise their dream. These young children are under extreme pressure to deal with serious medical issues and are in desperate need of encouragement. At RFAD we believe in the power of inspiring hope, particularly for a child who has been told that they may not have much longer to live.
For us at Reach for a Dream, the most important motivator is to make the dream a truly memorable and magical experience.
By making dreams come true RFAD enriches children's lives, we offer each child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to illness.
The process of dream fulfillment begins with a visit to the dream child at the location where the child is being cared for. Once a doctor has verified that the child meets the criteria for dream fulfillment, the dream assessment process begins.
Once permission has been granted by the doctor, we take the child, together with their family, out of their normal surroundings, to fulfill their dream. Anyone can contribute to a dream for a child fighting a life threatening illness. The fulfillment of these dreams has the positive effect of inspiring hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for.

“By fulfilling their dreams, Reach For A Dream brings hope, joy and inspiration by offering a magical moment to regain a childhood lost to illness” – Julia Sotirianakos, CEO, Reach For A Dream
In 30 years, the Reach For A Dream Foundation has brought hope to over 60 000 life-threatened children across South Africa. The Foundation discovered an interesting fact about life-threatening illnesses: a larger percentage of children survive than adults. We believe that one of the reasons for this is, that children simply have not learnt what life-threatening means; they live each day as it is given to them. For children attitude is everything, and they need all the encouragement they can get. Whatever the dream, no matter how big or small, it often gives the child hope and courage to carry on the fight. The fulfilment of these dreams inspires hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for.
“Hope gives us the courage to confront our circumstances and the capacity to surmount them.” – Dr Groopman, author of “The Anatomy of Hope” and Professor at Harvard Medical School.

[/dt_sc_one_half][dt_sc_one_half ][/dt_sc_one_half][/dt_sc_fullwidth_section]What is Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving allows employees to contribute towards charities like Reach For A Dream by giving their employers permission to deduct it from their salaries.
This is a very convenient way for them to make tax efficient contributions towards a cause of their choice.
How Payroll Giving Works
In order to start a Payroll Giving Scheme, the employer needs to subscribe to the Reach For A Dream Donor Payroll and will be issued a Donor Code for this account.
The employees can then choose to sign up for the scheme by completing a consent form to authorize their deductions. The Payroll Department (HR) simply deducts the money from the employee’s gross salary, and the Payroll or Finance Department will then transfer the collected donations to the Reach for a Dream Foundation.
The foundation will issue a thank you letter and annual Tax Exempt receipts (Section 18(a) Certificate) to each Payroll Giving Donor.
Benefits Of Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving is an easy, tax efficient way to contribute towards the Reach For A Dream Foundation. There are no administrations costs going to an external party and every cent of the funds will go towards fulfilling the dreams of children countrywide that are fighting life threatening diseases. The system is easy to opt in and out of, giving the donors full control over their giving.
Benefits for charities
Payroll Giving creates a sustainable income stream for the charity, making it easier to budget and plan. The donation goes straight from the individual’s account into the Reach For A Dream bank account.
It’s a way to communicate with and get to know donors (although donors can choose to remain anonymous). This way the charity can build a relationship with them and employers.
Benefits for individuals
Benefits for employers
Payroll Giving Contracts
Why do Employers need to sign a Payroll Giving Contract?
By signing a contract, the employer commits to making deductions on behalf of employees that wish to participate in the scheme and to forward these monies to the charity every month.
This agreement will secure the partnership between the company and Reach For A Dream and will provide all the necessary information for an audit trail for pre-tax payroll deductions. The agreement is very simple and contains all the relevant information needed to comply with pre-tax deduction legislations.
Payroll Giving Form
Employees need to complete a Payroll Giving Form to authorize the employer to make deductions from their pay. Employees simply complete one form, identifying Reach For A Dream as their charity of choice, and indicate how much they wish to give and for which period. Copies of the completed forms are submitted to Reach For A Dream to maintain a database and verify promised funding.
What Does the Employer Have to Do?
Once a month, employers need to forward employees’ payroll deductions to the charity, including a list of people that have donated and the amount they have deducted during that period.
This is a great way to keep records, to ensure that each employee receives a Section 18A certificate and to give them feedback about how their contributions were used. These receipts and feedback will be given annually.
What Happens if an Employee Wants to Remain Anonymous?
All donors have the opportunity to donate anonymously if they prefer. Reach for A Dream will ensure that their information remains confidential. No additional contact will be made unless it’s initiated by the individual.

[/dt_sc_one_sixth]Camp Sunshine is a weekend away where the emphasis is placed on team work and building social skills. Children with similar medical challenges are drawn together in days of fun, spent outdoors where their illnesses are set aside.
The children learn social skills in peer group settings which is an imperative step in their lives as their social interaction is often limited to interaction with doctors and their family only. The camp also nurtures confidence and problem solving skills, overcoming obstacles as part of a team.
The name Camp Sunshine describes the camp perfectly as the weekend is truly filled with joy, sunshine and laughter.

Here young boys face adventure head on, with smiles that cannot be contained and a spirit that cannot be suppressed.
Captain Courage offers many adventures, including zip lining; obstacle courses; horseback riding and interaction with wild animals. A day spent at Captain Courage allows children to focus on a day of fun, and to forget about their illness, while enjoying themselves romping outdoors in the sun.
At the end of the day, each boy receives a medal and a certificate, reminding him that he has the ability to overcome obstacles, including his illness.

This adage holds true in the hospitals where the wards are filled with laughter thanks to the Jabulani team. Each Jabulani entertainer’s aim is to bring a smile to the children’s faces, through a number of acts including tricycles, juggling, balloon sculptures, magic, face paint and, above all, silliness.
Laughter is known to strengthen the immune system, boost energy, minimise lethargy and decrease stress. These effects are important for both the children suffering from life threatening illnesses and their families, who often need a few minutes of sheer fun to alleviate the stress of being in hospital.

the little boys was crying. Being in a playful mood, I decided to make balloons for all the children. Most were boys, so I made balloon swords. As we were playing, the crying of that one little boy became less and less. Eventually he got out of bed and came closer to investigate, at which point I made a balloon sword for him as well. Within a few minutes he had joined the rest of the crew running around with their balloon swords! The sisters were very grateful and said he has been crying for long time, as he had his operation earlier that day. They didn’t think anyone could get him to smile, let alone start running around. That was one of the first memorable moments that made me appreciate and love what I do even more.

It brings a tear to my eyes to this day. All the times when I do something silly & make a child laugh & the nurses exclaim “She’s never smiled, let alone laughed, since she was admitted”. [/dt_sc_icon_box_colored][/dt_sc_one_half][/dt_sc_fullwidth_section]No family expects a child to be diagnosed with a life threatening illness, and once the diagnosis has been made the entire family’s reality changes. The new family dynamic often strains the relationships of parents with their children and of siblings with each other. Families often become isolated, limiting their movements to the proposed treatment plan.
Family Focus aims to alleviate these challenges by offering families a chance to rebuild their relationships and meet other families experiencing similar circumstances. The weekend is filled with activities, focusing on the entire family enjoying a day of fun, where illnesses are forgotten.
Here relationships are built, friendships are formed and an escape from the hospital and its associated worries is achieved.

By Matthew’s mom, Janet LegemaateIn 2007, when Matthew was 10 years of age, his doctors put him forward to Reach for A Dream as they didn’t expect him to survive much longer. In the latter part of 2007, Matthew’s dream of going to Walt Disney World came about as a result of RFAD organising for Make a Wish in the USA to gift the family accommodation and tickets to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. After we arranged the money for flights we were off for Matthew to have the holiday of a lifetime. The experience was far more than Matthew could ever imagine, staying at Give Kids the World Village, where even the dustbins talked, having a star with his name placed on the ceiling of the castle, to walking around in amazement at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. Matthew had an incredible time, living the adventures he had seen in videos and having the opportunity to go on rides and meet characters from his favourite movies. Thank you RFAD for giving Matthew his wish and an experience of a lifetime. Matthew subsequently went on permanent oxygen a couple of years after this trip as he needed a heart and double lung transplant. This he received after waiting for 7 years in October of 2017. He is doing incredibly well and plans to Pay it Forward as much as he is able in the future.[text* your-name placeholder "First Name*"]

1 Subject: Slipper Day 2018 [your-name]Dave’s story
Submitted by Dave’s mom, Patricia WasserfallDave had just finished grade 10 and the holidays had just started. He was 15 years old. It was 1998. He came to me with a problem that he couldn’t pass urine and what should we do. After various tests we discovered that he had a tumour and he had prostate cancer at 15 years old. For two years we took him through to Pretoria to the Little Company of Mary to have chemo and then radiation. He met so many youngsters so much younger than him going through the same trauma.During that time we tried to make him as comfortable as possible. We would buy new computer games for him to make the time pass. My other son, Colin, took him to Namibia for a holiday and stood by his brother right through the dreadful pain. While at The little Company of Mary they arranged a helicopter ride with Reach for a Dream. It was at Zwartkoppies. He forgot all his pain that day and enjoyed himself so much. Soon after that he went for another session of chemo. Months later he, myself and his stepbrother were taken to Leopard Rock Reserve for a few days donated by Reach for a Dream. The people at the reserve were so kind to Dave and patiently listened to his life story. We took Dave on holiday whenever he was feeling well enough. He loved horses and at Zimbali in KZN he was taken for a few horse rides. He was so brave for those two years suffering so many problems rushing him off in the middle of the night to various doctors with so many bad affects brought on by the chemo. He had a wonderful doctor at the oncology centre in Pretoria who took such good care of him and I am so thankful to all the people who supported us through that terrible time that our 15 year old son suffered. Towards the end, Hospice in Houghton sent a wonderful nurse to help us.Looking through my memory box I have from 1998 to 2000 of Dave I have such beautiful cards from family and friends and a diary that David kept that, although sad at times, brings a smile and a tear to my face. He had to grow up so fast. Where other teenagers looked forward to parties and meeting friends and having girlfriends Dave was just too happy to be alive and being pain free and having his mother and brother by his side to sympathise and comfort him through his pain. Having a movie to watch, a book to read and playing his favourite games on the computer.Dave died in 2000. I think about all the wonderful things that have since happened that he would have enjoyed in his life. My other, Colin, went on to marry and has had two most gorgeous children that Dave would have enjoyed having in his life. My third son moved to Tasmania and had three children. Dave would have loved to have spent time with them. We have six most delightful dogs that would have loved the time with Dave. He had so many adventures to experience. We always think of him when new thing happen in our lives.“We miss you so much Dave, even though seventeen years have passed you are always with us.”We believe in the power of dreams; we encourage children to use their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses and we try, as far as possible, to make these dreams come true. Our vision is to grow the Foundation to enable us to continue giving hope to children fighting life-threatening illnesses through the fulfillment of their dreams and making our national projects available to as many of the children as we can, the projects include: Camp Sunshine, Queen for a Day, Captain Courage, Show You Care Send A Bear and the Jabulani Kingdom Hospital entertainers which function on an ongoing basis.
