Cell C and Reach for a Dream Refurbish Paediatric Wards, Creating Dream Rooms for Children Across South Africa

For children facing life-threatening illnesses, hospitals often become a second home, but one filled with stress, fear, and long treatments. To change that, Cell C, in partnership with the Reach for a Dream Foundation, is continuing its mission to transform paediatric wards into vibrant havens of hope, with two new Dream Rooms being unveiled this month.

The handovers at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal and Bloemfontein National District Hospital in the Free State, saw the paediatric wards transformed into vibrant Dream Rooms, bringing colour, comfort, and moments of joy to children facing serious illnesses.

Featuring bright decor, interactive play zones, and creative installations such as virtual reality, educational games, and arts and crafts, each element was chosen to create a safe and inspiring environment that helps ease the stress of treatment while supporting emotional well-being.

“Every Dream Room is a reminder that hope can live even in the most challenging circumstances,” said Chloe Katompa, Head of Operations at Reach For A Dream. “Through our partnership with Cell C, we’re able to bring comfort and imagination into hospital wards, creating spaces where children can dream beyond their illness and rediscover the joy of being a child.”

This initiative builds on previous Dream Room refurbishments at Steve Biko Paediatric Cardiology and Pulmonology Clinic in Pretoria and St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care in Cape Town, where children and families have already experienced the comfort and hope these spaces bring. Together with Reach for a Dream, Cell C has committed to refurbishing paediatric wards at nine hospitals nationwide. This long-term partnership ensures that more children across South Africa will benefit from hospital environments that foster resilience, healing, and positivity.

As part of Cell C’s wider social impact initiatives, the Dream Rooms embody the company’s commitment to being more than a telecommunications provider – it is a tangible expression of its role as a catalyst for socio-economic progress in South Africa.

“Dream Rooms give children more than a place to recover – they give them a place to laugh, play, and simply be children,” said Lethiwe Hlatshwayo, Managing Executive for Corporate Affairs at Cell C. “It’s about dignity, hope, and the belief that brighter days are always ahead.”

Through partnerships with Reach for a Dream, Cell C aims to empower families, inspire resilience, and contribute to a future where every child has the chance to thrive.
