10-Year-Old Isabella Fulfils Her Dream of Meeting the Springboks
  • 30 Sep 2024

East London’s Isabella Esterhuyse, a brave 10-year-old living with cancer, experienced the dream of a lifetime on Saturday, 28th September, when she met her rugby heroes, the Springboks, thanks to Reach For A Dream.

Isabella, diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma earlier this year, held team captain Siya Kolisi’s hand during the national anthem before the game against Argentina in Nelspruit. This unforgettable moment brought immense joy to Isabella, her family, and everyone who witnessed her inspiring dream come true.

For 36 years, Reach For A Dream has been fulfilling the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses, creating magical moments that bring hope and happiness to their toughest days. With six dreams fulfilled daily, the organisation continues to inspire resilience and positivity among young dreamers.

Isabella’s Dream Made Possible

When Dr Rema Matthew referred Isabella to Reach For A Dream, she shared her top three dreams: meeting the Springboks, going on a safari, or receiving an iPad. Her love for rugby made meeting the Springboks her number one dream. After receiving medical clearance, Reach For A Dream collaborated with SA Rugby and generous sponsors like Capital Hotel & Apartments and Shamrock Pies to make Isabella’s dream a reality.

On the day of the match, Isabella radiated excitement as she stepped onto the field alongside her heroes. The Springboks’ victory in securing the 2024 Rugby Championship added to the joy of the day. Reflecting on the experience, Isabella said “I had the time of my life. My favourite part was holding Siya Kolisi’s hand on the field and when Gayton McKenzie let me hand over the trophy.”

Her mother, Tara, expressed heartfelt gratitude, “This day has meant everything to Isabella. We are overwhelmed by the love and support shown to our daughter.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Despite her ongoing medical journey, Isabella is determined to return to the rugby field and play club rugby again. “I miss rugby so much, and I cannot wait to get back on the field,” she shared. Inspired by her journey and the care she has received, Isabella also dreams of becoming a paediatric oncologist to help other children with cancer.
